History
Born in Paris, France, Astor was used to living in an upper-class part of the city. Though their home was small it still held everything that was needed for a comfortable and even luxurious life. The heart of the city was beautiful, especially at night. At least, that’s what his mother and father would always tell him. There was only one thing that stopped Astor from seeing this beauty for himself: he was completely blind. Even if he couldn’t see, he delighted in his other senses – smelling fresh bread in the mornings, listening to the bustle around him, tasting the wondrous foods and drinks of his country.

But just as his parents spoke of the city’s beauty, describing it to him in the utmost detail, they always were sure to tell him that he was also. His mother always called him her personal porcelain doll, often dressing him in the softest fabrics which he could only assume were beautiful by how they felt. She would tell him that porcelain dolls had to have perfect posture and good manners or they would crack and grow dull. He didn’t mind, since he was always rewarded for his good behavior with sweets and treats.

In his free time, he loved to seclude himself and improve on a skill he’d picked up: sketching. He’d learned that he was able to trace an object with his fingers and visualize it almost perfectly in his mind. But now he needed to learn how to put what he had in mind on paper. It was difficult and frustrating at first, but once he learned how to trace his own lines with his finger and continue from there, he was able to draw things such as mugs, lamps, and eventually faces. And since he enjoyed working with his hands so much, he even tried out pottery which he seemed to have a strong affinity for.

As he grew older, his parents decided they wanted their child to explore the world despite his handicap. They were overjoyed at his hobby but didn’t want him to be locked away forever.  Packing up their things and leaving their home’s care to the housekeepers, they brought him all around the continent. Eventually they moved even further, going to Asia, South and North America. It was all very delightful but after so many years of going around and learning new things, Astor mostly wanted to return home.

While on the boat back home, he found himself conversing with a seemingly nice stranger. They spoke of his adventures and how he’d picked up on and enjoyed the various cultures. Seeing the way he carried himself, the stranger offered him a job that he could perform despite his lack of sight. His parents urged him to give it a try, as long as he wrote to them and visited when he could, not wanting him to give up on an opportunity like this.

Other:
- Has a very strong reaction to catnip
- His French accent is faint unless he grows emotional
- Completely blind in both eyes
- If anything’s moved out of place he can get very confused and lost
- Never uses a cane and prefers to have a ‘seeing-eye dog’
- Hair is frail and silky, so he tries to care for it well
- Despite his claws, his fingertips are soft as satin
- Sleeps hugging his tail since it comforts him, even if someone else is there
- Likes to be dressed up like a doll
- Becomes feverish and sick if he eats any fruits or vegetables, has a more severe reaction to grains
